Projects Goals
Prescott National Forest asked VOAz to build a new trail at Salida Gulch to replace a trail that followed the drainage and passed through a petroglyph site. Unfortunately, the temptation to touch such artifacts is too great when access is that convenient. The oils from the skin will, when contact is repeated over time, degrade these artifacts. The new trail was sited to bypass several other sensitive archeological zones as well and take trail users to an elevation that affords views of the forest and the canyon it skirts. Thus the new name. The completed trail will be about two miles long between the Trailhead off Walker Road on the south east side of Prescott and ends at John's Tank where it connects with a shared use trail. The finished trail is 30" wide and will serve hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians.
The Salida Overview Trail 95 project began in the spring of 2005 and is scheduled to be completed by June 2010.

VOAz teamed up Yavapai Trails Association and REI for this event. Forty two volunteers (Kristi Alexander, Michael Baker, Les Cherow, Kelly Daughtery, Dustin Ewald, Ken Fiebelkorn, Tom Frazer, Mike Galwey, Doris Gonzales, Judy Hulden, Bonnie Hyra, Teresa Irby-Butler, Susan Jones, Beth Johnson, Sally Kirch, Fred Kraps, Matt Lambert, Gail Landry, Marie Liddle, Peter Mathew Martin, Michiels, Aminda Moore, James Pessin, Nigel Reynolds, Brian and Cindy Romanchuk, Rita Rosenthal, Skip Russi, Ken Ryan, Ken and Wendy Satoyoshi, Jan and Jim Schlieper, Mike Snodgrass, Nancy Spence, Fred Stellbrink, Deb Stevens, Sandra Stirnweis, Marilyn Schrab, Dave Troutner, Thomas Tusia, Bruce Weidenhamer) spent National Trails Day working in the Prescott National Forest clearing the corridor for a new Salida Gulch Trail. Crews completed 2400 feet of corridor clear for a new trail that will eventually cover 1.5 miles. The trail is being rerouted away from a petroglyph site, which volunteers were able to hike out to observe (but not touch!).

Eighteen volunteers braved the elements (high 70s to low 50s) to begin construction of Trail 93 (Salida Gulch trail) in the Prescott National Forest. 500 feet of full bench tread, one large climbing turn, and over 40 feet of rock retaining wall were constructed. Thanks to Bill Cook from Prescott National Forest for providing porta-johns and fresh drinking water.

Nineteen volunteers completed 1310 feet of difficult tread. A nice reward for this event was a hike led by Charlie Scully to the petroglyphs of Salida Gulch.

Another crack team of VOAz trail builders opened 450' of corridor; constructed 120 feet of new tread; conducted finishing tasks over 2200' of previously constructed tread; and built a major switchback a spectacular fall weekend.

Two crews building rock wall and clearing tread

It was a damp cool Saturday and a beautiful clear day on Sunday for the 52 volunteers who joined us for the REI Spring Service Project in the pines of the Prescott National Forest to continue construction of a new trail. Teams cleared 1640 feet of new tread (over a quarter mile) at 30-36 inches versus the usual 18-24 inches. 940 feet of that total had all the finishing touches made and determined complete. Work included a rock reinforced drain, rock walls, clearing tread, lopping, and digging out a few @#$%^&*! Manzanitas roots.
Back at the ranch (Lynx Creek Campground) Carla and several REI and ASU volunteers made sure we registered, received a goody bag, prepared dinner and a breakfast, and gave out fabulous REI prizes (socks anyone). Members of the Base Camp Staff: Dustin Ewald (REI & ASU), Chelsea McKinney (ASU), Jenny Riegel (ASU), Carla Olson (REI Outreach Specialist, PV). Thanks to Roy Riegel for entertaining the hard working troops with his acoustic guitar.

Fifty two volunteers turned out for this crew leader rich Spring REI Service Project. A total of 1050 feet of new trail was completed, including an 85 foot retaining wall on a major climbing turn. An additional 200 feet of trail was partially completed.

Thirty Five Volunteers came together for a great weekend of trail work, good food and camaraderie. Participants dug their tools into over 2000 feet of trail, finishing 600 feet of previously started tread, building 1000 feet of new tread, and starting an additional 400 feet of tread. Volunteers left happy and satisfied.

Twenty-three VOAZ volunteers contributed 276 hours to complete the new Salida View Trail #95 in the Prescott National Forest south of Prescott,
AZ. Participants enjoyed great sunny fall weather for completing 600 feet of tread. Afterwards another great dinner was enjoyed by all at the
Lynx Lake Campground where the large camp fire and big jug of red wine kept everyone toasty warm on Halloween night. This was the 9th VOAZ
event working on the Salida View Trail #95 since 2005 and the trail now connects to a 4.1 mile loop through the Prescott National Forest.
Thanks to all the volunteers and staff who participated on this project over the years. It's a wonderful new trail.
